Carrie Bernans, an actress and stunt performer who worked on "Black Panther" and 2023's movie musical "The Color Purple," is recovering after a driver crashed into her while allegedly fleeing the scene of a hit-and-run in New York on New Year's Day.
Bernans' mother Patricia Lee shared photos of the stunt performer on Instagram Monday following the incident in midtown Manhattan, showing graphic images of Bernans' injuries including bruising and several chipped teeth.
"She's in so much pain but healing. She was involved in a traumatic incident in NYC where a man, early 40s was trying to escape a hit and run and ran into multiple cars before hitting a food stand that her friend & her were walking near," Bernans' mother captioned the post. "It ended up knocking her unconscious and pended (sic) her under the stand. She was under it unaware of what was happening."
She continued, "She has a few broken bones, fractures, & chipped teeth but thanking God that she's alive. … Amidst the chaos of the New Year’s incident, she's holding onto an immense sense of gratitude for life itself.
"This setback hasn't deterred her belief that something remarkable is still being crafted by God. Despite the injuries sustained in the collision caused by a hit-and-run in NYC, she's filled with hope and faith in the unfolding of a beautiful new chapter," the post concluded. "Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers as she navigate this path toward recovery and new beginnings."
Bernans, a new mom, shared videos on her Instagram Story thanking her followers and supporters for their prayers amid her hospitalization. "I'm strong. I'll be OK," she said in one clip while pumping breast milk for her 7-month-old son.
The stuntwoman was one of at least six people injured just after 1 a.m. ET on New Year's Day after a driver crashed into the sidewalk outside of a restaurant in Manhattan, the New York Police Department confirmed to USA TODAY Tuesday.
Before crashing into the sidewalk, the driver struck several police vehicles and a food truck, which trapped a 39-year-old woman, presumably Bernans.

Several people were hospitalized. The assailant, a 44-year-old man whose name has yet to be released, was hospitalized and is pending charges.
Bernans most recently appeared in "The Color Purple" as a stunt performer. She also has credits for stunt work as a double for Keke Palmer in "Nope," a double for Danielle Deadwyler in "The Harder They Fall," and as a Dora Milaje soldier in "Avengers: Endgame" and "Black Panther."
In addition to acting, she's also a producer.
